Project Worldwide: HKTX Blood Drive

Report

This year, Hong Kong Texas Exes organized the HKTX Blood Drive for its participation in “Texas Exes Project Worldwide”, Texas Exes’ community service initiative in which all Texas Exes chapters around the globe are asked to participate in a single day of community service anytime during the month of February. This year we chose to ask our member to give blood to Red Cross at any time of their choosing within February because the stock level of blood in Hong Kong had been low. The event did not happen on a single day, but we thought that the value of our action was more important than the value of sticking to the wording.

At least 2 members went to give blood within the month as a result of our calling as 2 alums sent us photos of their donation processes. On February 10 a fatal bus accident happened in Tai Po, Hong Kong, killing 19 people. The Donor Centres were immediately flooded with donors from all walks of life in Hong Kong. We thought some of our alumni donated blood as a result of the accident and they wanted to attribute their actions to helping those in need instead of the calling of their alumni organization. Some might have missed the chance because the Donor Centres were full of people, resulting in waiting time of more than 4 hours.

With that we cannot judge whether our effort was successful or not. In any case, we did see what we wanted to see, which was that the stock level of blood in Hong Kong had increased. This is much more important than claiming success of our activity.

Invitation

“Texas Exes Project Worldwide” is Texas Exes’ community service initiative in which all Texas Exes chapters around the globe are asked to participate in a single day of community service anytime during the month of February. This international service initiative is an extension of an annual student-driven community service project on the UT campus known as “The Project” which also takes place in February and attracts thousands of UT students, alumni, faculty and staff to give back to the community.

Since 2016 HKTX has been participating in this initiative. In 2016, participants of the Annual General Meeting 2016 donated a sum of money to Oxfam, and in 2017 a number of alumni contributed some of food gifts they received during the Chinese New Year and we donated the items to Food Grace.

This year, we are organizing a blood drive for Project Worldwide 2018. We would like to ask you donate blood to the Red Cross at any date you pick within the month of February at any Red Cross Donor Centre. We would like you to send us a picture of you taken during the process. We will make a collage with these pictures and will report our participation to Texas Exes.

Support Project Worldwide, give blood, and may the ‘Horns be with y’all!
